This presentation explores the implementation of a pilot juvenile drug court intervention from its conceptual beginning to actual operation. Drawing on the authors' experience as both evaluators and planners of this intervention, the presentation will review drug court principles applicable to a juvenile setting, and will describe policy issues, organizational and implementation challenges faced by a new drug court in a major metropolitan area. The authors also consider how drug court concepts such as graduated sanctions must be modified for effective implementation in a juvenile court setting.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, the participant should be able to identify the operative principles of drug court interventions, and how these principles are applied in a juvenile justice setting.
