Patient care, patient education and the appropriateness of screening tests can be improved through the use of evidence-based practice guidelines. Criteria for the selection of practice guidelines will be presented. A method of adapting guidelines published by professional organizations to the unique aspects of each clinical setting will be discussed. The example of the application of practice guidelines presented will include medical record review, peer review and utilization review including non-punitive feedback mechanisms. Practice guidelines also can guide the selection of specific quality of care monitors. Using evidence-based practice guidelines as a guide, the care provided can lead to more standard treatment protocols, more consistent patient education and more appropriately applied screening tests for specific diseases/conditions in any patient care situation.
Learning Objectives: After this presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Evaluate a practice guideline. 2. Apply an evidence-based guideline to their clinical situation. 3. Use a practice guideline to improve the appropriateness of the conduction of screening tests, consistency of patient education given in the clinical setting and quality of care provided.
