OBJECTIVES New drug therapies can control disease progression for children living with HIV/AIDS, allowing them a better quality of life than ever before. With funding from NIMH, State of the Art produced a documentary video for caregivers of HIV+ children (biological, foster, and adoptive parents, and other caregivers). This video examines the challenges that HIV+ children and their caregivers may face including stress, depression, neurological impairment, discrimination, and social isolation. The session will present the methodology used to develop and evaluate the video. METHODS. Investigators interviewed caregivers of HIV+ children and professionals, then analyzed interview content to develop creative plans describing the video and companion booklet. Project advisors and focus groups reviewed creative plans. Investigators used revised creative plans to scout and shoot profiles of three families for the video. Rough cuts of the video and booklet were reviewed by advisors and focus group tested with caregivers of HIV+ children and professionals working with HIV+ children. RESULTS. The video models children and caregivers getting support through community resources, family, and friends. The video profiles HIV+ children and families from different backgrounds (gender, race/ethnicity, SES) and in different living situations (single and multiple parents, rural and urban homes). Service providers and clinicians can use the video to help families learn to cope with HIV/AIDS, and to train staff. Evaluation of the Positively series (beginning in February, 2001) uses a short-term longitudinal, quasi-experimental pre/post-test design with caregivers of HIV+ children to test the materials’ effectiveness. Results will be reported at the session.
