Creciendo Saludable (CS)is five year study of a comprehensive, multifocal school based prevention model serving 1100 immigrant Hispanic families in California. A mid-study analysis of approximately 250 targeted students has found that program participation is associated with significant changes in teacher report of anti-school attitudes, academic confidence, school performance, and school motivation and parent report of significant declines in family stress. Culturally appropriate enrollment and retention strategies utlizing community outreach workers has been combined with the use of an innovative software program to support the fidelity of implementation, on-going evaluation and service delivery. The model has broad application for schools and communities in health and wellness promotion.
Learning Objectives: 1. Define an elementary student assistance model for health and wellness that utilizes a software program for efficient management of identification, referal and service delivery. 2. Identify cultural adaptations required for a newly immigrated Hispanic population 3. Define six effective strategies in community outreach that enroll and retain participants 4. Articulate five positive outcomes for students and families participating in the student assistance program. 5. Define community health indicators impacted by the student assistance program.
