At both the individual and community levels, we are learning that a holistic and collaborative approach can make public health programs more effective. This presentation will describe one model for integrating spirituality, community and health: Jewish Healing Centers (JHCs). JHCs draw on Jewish texts, rituals and values to provide spiritual and emotional support to those dealing with illness and loss. There are approximately 20 such centers in the US, with at least 5 additional centers in development. During this session, results of a survey of JHCs will be presented, including detailed information about programming, funding sources, organizational structures, and staffing. Most JHCs function under the auspices of existing Jewish social service agencies, and provide educational programs, spiritual support groups, friendly visitors, and information and referrals. Additional programming varies depending on the sponsoring agency and the needs of the local community. All JHCs are funded from local sources, primarily Jewish community foundations.
