With increasing frequency, schools of public health are providing online access to core courses for students. Distance based education using the Internet opens up new opportunities for students in rural areas, sparsely populated states, and globally. The purpose of this presentation is to describe and illustrate the process of planning, design, and delivery of an asynchronous, interactive, on-line epidemiology course using WebCT, HTML, Microsoft PowerPoint and Flash and Shockwave technology. Evaluations of the course will be presented. Handouts provided will include comprehensive vocabulary and resource lists, worksheets for course development, instructions for smoothly integrating graphics and animation formats into course delivery, and methods for managing chat rooms, grades, and time management. Learning objectives include understanding the function and capabilities of WebCT integrated with graphics and animation software; basic knowledge of modular course design and delivery; and knowledge of strengths and pitfalls in on-line instruction.
Learning Objectives: Develop a modular course for delivery on the Internet. Demonstrate familiarity with core concepts of distance education online. Describe the advantages and pitfalls in teaching epidemiology online.
