Learnings from the PHN Practice for the 21st Century Project

The Public Health Nursing for the 21st Century Project: Population-Based Public Health Nursing (Division of Nursing #6D10HP30392-02) was completed in June, 2001. The project developed a population-based curriculum that incorporated the Public Health Interventions Model, piloted the curriculum via a combination of 3 interactive video conferences and 3 on site instructions at eleven sites in 5 states, established a preceptor network (a group of 33 expert public health nurses who facilitated the application of theory into practice with the 120 participating PHNs), developed evidence-based best practices for the public health interventions, designed a PHN competency instrument, and produced three national satellites on population-based practice. This session will present the highlights of the evaluation of the various grant components. It will summarize the evaluation findings and implications for PHN practice from the 150 regional pre-and post-competency tests and 2500 pre-and post tests that nurses completed for the satellite registration. The session will then present the results of an administrator survey that identified perceived benefits and costs of staff participation in the regional training as well as what influences agency adoption of population-based practice. The session will also present a comparison of interactive video conferencing with on site instruction, perceived benefits and value of the preceptor experience for both participants and preceptors, the types of learning participants identified as most influential in changing practice, a description of the PHNs that benefitted most from the training, and future training needs. Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify the major evaluation findings of the PHN Practice for the 21st Century Project. 2. Describe the major implications of the evaluation findings for public health nursing practice. 3. Articulate at least one application from these findings that apply to his/her own public health nursing practice.
