Since 1997, Johnson, Bassin, and Shaw, Inc. (JBS) has collaborated the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to address many social and health problems affecting Native Americans. The comprehensive Office of Public and Indian Housing Information and Resource Center (PIH IRC), was created by HUD in November 1997 to serve all Public and Indian Housing, and to provide a central information hub for PIH. The constituents include housing authorities, tribes, tribally designated housing entities (TDHEs), and related resident groups.
The oversight/evaluation of this program is being conducted by JBS. Over the last 3 years, JBS through the coordination of IRC activities has guided the development of a central mechanism for communication providing communities with technical information and policy changes.
In FY 1998, JBS in collaboration with HUD's Grant Management Center (GMC) to develop culturally-sensitive Native American products addressing the problems of drugs. These products have paved the way for the "new approach anti-drug program" within HUD's initiative and have been recognized for their excellence in the field. The products are the result of a series of workshops, technical assistance, and site visits.
The proposed poster session would provide an overview of effective community efforts in the development of Native American research, communication, and information infrastructures by looking at Lessons Learned and Best Practices gathered from technical assistance and field reviews. The poster session will include descriptions of HUD's Native American leadership training programs, benchmarks in the community, and data collected via site visits and technical assistance activities provided to communities.
