More and more schools and programs in public health that offer distance learning have adopted the use of educational software to create entire courses online or to complement a classroom-based course. Georgia Southern University's goal is to provide public health students the option of taking all courses online using the Internet. Yet, there are a number of challenges and disadvantages to this academic model. The purpose of this paper is to describe our use of a software program to create a pedagogically effective web-based educational environment over a 3 year period. The authors will share different strategies and approaches for using distance learning software. At least three mechanisms for obtaining evaluation data will be reviewed, and suggestions for improving the experience for both faculty and public health students will be described.
