Purpose: Recent national survey data indicate that drug use among adolescents is on the rise, underscoring the need to reach adolescents and develop innovative prevention intervention technologies. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a prototype CD-ROM for an effective, competency-enhancement drug abuse prevention program.
Abstract: The interactive CD-ROM was designed to teach drug resistance skills, normative education, and general life skills to middle/junior high school students. It demonstrates real life situations that adolescents may encounter, and decisions that they will likely face in their daily lives.
Methodology: In order to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and potential efficacy of using CD-ROM technology in drug abuse prevention, the prototype was subjected to two separate focus groups. The first focus group was composed of 8-10 adolescents and the second was composed of 10-12 adults including a mixture of teachers, parents and prevention experts. The overall purpose of the focus groups was to ascertain qualitative data on the CD-ROM’s credibility, effectiveness, and ease of use in school and at home.
Results: The procedure for developing the CD-ROM, demographic data and focus group themes will be presented. The findings will be used to direct the future development of a complete CD-ROM product.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to (1) Recognize the need for new technology in drug abuse prevention with students and (2) Identify ways to incorporate technology into prevention programs.
