Boston's Crusade Health Rides

Purpose: To mobilize the resources of government, the medical community, American Cancer Society and the taxi industry under the leadership of the Mayor, a cancer transportation system was developed and implemented. Statement of Methods: A cancer control task force identified transportation as a major barrier for residents seeking cancer treatment in Boston. A needs assessment of all cancer centers indicated the need for such a program. Summary of Results: Mayor Menino guarenteed transportation to cancer treatment for 100% of those in need. Funds were secured to provide the infustructure necessary to carry out this iniatitive. To date over 5,000 rides have been given. Conclusion: Innovative broad based collaborations under the strong leadership can be effective in mobilizing community resources with the goal decreasing the cancer mortality for the city of Boston.
