The Kenyatta University Family Welfare and Counseling Project was started by Pathfinder International in 1988, followed by a similar project at Egerton University two years later. Major activities of the program include: peer counseling, family life education (FLE), provision of integrated reproductive health services including Emergency Contraception (EC); treatment of STIs; information, education and communication (IEC); and distribution of condoms for dual protection. The present evaluation was commissioned to assess the 10/12-year impact of the project.
Results of the evaluation showed a marked decline in the rate of unwanted pregnancy, number of abortions and prevalence of STIs. This presentation will discuss the results of the evaluation as well as the factors that contributed to the decline in reproductive health problems among students at Kenyatta University and Egerton University.
