Due to South Carolina's high rates of perinatal HIV transmission, the state's Ryan White CARE Act provider training program was funded by the state health department for a specific initiative to train clinical providers on preventing perinatal HIV transmission. The project focused at first on the eight counties with the highest incidence of perinatal HIV transmission, but was expanded to include all 46 counties of the state. The educational resources and training programs of the project were targeted to OB/GYNs, family practice physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and physician assistants. Project staff compiled an information/resource manual and provided a laminated lab coat card with perinatal HIV prevention guidelines and local Title IV provider contact information to each of the more than 3,500 targeted clinical providers in the state. Training programs were also held for the women's services staff of each hospital with labor/delivery services in the eight counties with highest incidence of perinatal HIV. Additional training programs were coordinated with the state's maternal/child health regional systems developers, as well as with regional Area Health Education Centers (AHECs). This presentation will outline the obstacles encountered, present strategies which addressed those obstacles, discuss resources provided, and present the successful collaborative training and consultation outcomes.
Learning Objectives: Following this presentation, the participants will be able to: (1) Discuss issues of reaching rural perinatal care providers; (2) Discuss the strategies utilized in this project to address those issues; and (3) Cite available resources for technical assistance and training.
