Substance abuse, particularly alcohol abuse and misuse of prescription drugs, among those 60 years of age and older has been described as one of the fastest growing health problems in the U.S. today. Yet, substance abuse in this at-risk population remains under-estimated, under-diagnosed, and under-treated. Failure to detect or recognize substance abuse in the elderly has been attributed to denial among the elderly as well as their caregivers, mistaking symptoms for other health care problems, the stigma of substance abuse, and agism. The purpose of this health promotion/education program was to increase knowledge among the elderly and those in contact with them about substance use and abuse (including medications; prescription, over-the-counter,and alternative medications), to promote detection of substance abuse and promote referral of elderly persons who require assistance to reduce substance abuse for themselves, family, and community members. Focus groups, brown bag medication reviews, screening for alcohol abuse and six educational programs were conducted at three inner city senior centers. In addition, an extensive staff development program was presented to senior center staff city-wide to increase awareness, detection and referrals.
Learning Objectives: 1. To increase knowledge about substance abuse in the elderly. 2.To increase the recognition, detection and referrals of substance abuse in the elderly. 3.To promote the safe use of prescription and over-the-counter medications among the elderly. 4.To identify safe alternatives to substance abuse as coping strategies among the elderly
