Background: Black men are a group that is becoming infected with HIV at a growing rate. In 1999 14,964 Black men were diagnosed with AIDS making them the highest infected sub-population among all men. AIDS itself has transitioned from an acute quickly progressive and fatal disease to a long-term chronic illness. This positive trend however has sparked concern about long-term care needs for people living with HIV/AIDS. One aspect of this concern has centered around the role of nursing homes in providing long term care to AIDS patients. Design: Exploratory-descriptive two phase study consisting of a retrospective chart review (phase one) and focused interviews (phase two). Setting: Free standing not for profit community based skilled nursing home located in the northeast. Theoretical Framework: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs. Sample: Convenience sample of 73 Black men. Data collection Instruments: Healthcare Needs Chart Abstraction Form and Focused Interview Guide. Data Analysis: Quantitative data coded and prepared for computer analysis using SPSS. Descriptive statistics (parametric and non-parametric) used. Thematic analysis for qualitative interview data. Conclusion: The physiologic healthcare needs of this population are complex but can be effectively dealt with in dedicated nursing home settings. Implications: This study has implications for nursing practice, the nursing home industry, and long term care policy planning.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the physiologic healthcare needs of HIV infected Black men upon admission to an AIDS dedicated nursing home. 2. Discuss how these needs can inform the nursing care of HIV infected Black men in long term care settings. 3. Discuss the long term care planning needs of HIV infected Black men.
