Pathfinder International along with Azerbaijan Sociological Association conducted a survey on FP/RH among refugees and IDPs, who temporarily live in the territory of Apsheron peninsula, in order to have baseline data to plan project activities. The survey assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practice of refugees and IDPs with regards to FP/RH; men’s, women’s, and adolescents' health; and domestic violence. The survey, using a standardized “face to face” interview with the respondent, was administered to 500 refugees/IDPs (150 men and 150 women of reproductive age, and 100 girls and 100 boys aged 12-17 years).
Results showed that only 33.5% of men currently resided in the IDP/refugee camps as most had left to find work outside Azerbaijan. 83% of the women surveyed had undergone at least one abortion and 68.9% had not received post-abortion FP counseling. Very few (4.2%) women had received prenatal care and many (45%) women delivered at home. Knowledge of STIs and HIV/AIDS was extremely limited (32% of women, 30% of men, 31% of boys, and 28% of girls knew about HIV/AIDS). Gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and syphilis were the only STIs that people knew and 78% did not know where STDs/HIV/AIDS could be treated. 80.3% of women knew of modern contraceptive methods but their knowledge of methods other than condoms, pills, and the IUD was very limited. Domestic violence was a significant problem within the refugee/IDP population.
This presentation will discuss the survey results and how these results were used to develop FP/RH interventions for refugee and IDP populations.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1) discuss FP/RH knowledge, attitude, and practice among refugee and IDP populations in Azerbaijan, 2) describe how survey results can be used to design FP/RH interventions 3) apply lessons learned to other FP/RH programs that target refugees and IDPs.
