Providing service to community agencies by health professional students results in benefits for both. The Oregon Health Sciences University Graduate School of Nursing has partnered with various health agencies to assess their clientele and evaluate their services in the form of student research projects. This presentation will focus on one project undertaken with the Virginia Garcia Migrant Clinic. The clinic identified a need to evaluate encounter forms from its mobile van outreach program to migrant camps during the summer 2000. The encounter forms specify the type of health need and care provided to each migrant farmworker seen in the camps. The information is to be used for future grants and will be passed on to donors to the camp program. As part of the project, three students developed a database and entered data from 698 forms. At this time, the data is being analyzed for demographic data, percentages of preventive and medical care provided, types and rates of medical diagnoses, treatment provided, and referrals. The students will review medical charts from the clinic to determine the number of successful follow throughs with referrals. In addition, the students will compare their findings with a similar student project completed 3 years previously. The purpose of the comparison will be to determine changes in types and frequencies of medical problems seen in the summer of 2000 as compared with the summer of 1997. The final report to the clinic is scheduled for April 2001 (these students will be graduating June 2001).
Learning Objectives: At the completion of this session, the participants will be able to: 1. discuss community service as part of graduate nursing education 2. discuss the types and percentages of preventive needs, medical problems, and treatments provided in Oregon migrant camps in summer 2000 3. discuss changes in objective #2 when compared to summer 1997
