An Undergraduate Environmental Health Program in a School of Public Health

For over 50 years the University of Washington has provided an Bachelor of science degree in Environmental Health. The BS degree, reflecting its origins in the School of Medicine, provides a basic Pre-Med curriculum having a strong base in the natural sciences of biology, chemistry, and physics. To this foundation are added core courses in public health and environmental health sciences.

This paper will describe: -- how the environmental health curriculum fits with the general undergraduate curriculum and with the graduate curriculum in our department; -- the students who enter the program and what do they do with their training upon graduation; -- how well the program working in our department and school; and, -- the lessons we have learned from our experience.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this peresentation, the participant (learner) will be able to: -- Describe the University of Washington’s undergraduate program in environmental health; -- Describe the student population and some of the challenges to recruiting undergraduate students into schools of public health; and -- Discuss the relationship of undergraduate and graduate educational programs within schools of public health.
