Healthy People 2010, (HP 2010) is the public health agenda for the nation for the remainder of the first decade of the new millennium. HP2010 is the first of the three-decade long Healthy People Initiative documents to contain a designated chapter on vision and eye health.
This presentation will review the ten (10) vision and eye health objectives contained within HP 2010’s Chapter 28. Progress made toward implementing, monitoring, and achieving these objectives will be reported, The update will highlight model projects and report on activities within the vision and eye care community. Various ways in which public health officials, doctors of optometry, vision researchers, teachers, academicians, clinicians and those interested in enhancing the nation's vision and eye health well-being will be presented. Some of these include: translation of vision and eye health objectives into state HP2010 documents, using HP2010 objectives for advocacy purposes, professional association development and passage of resolution, inclusion of HP 2010 in health professions curriculum, fund research and service in areas cited in HP2010, development of Healthy Vision 2010 logo, work with teachers and educational administrators to insure their understanding of the role of vision in learning, development of patient education pamphlets
