Abstract #26438

Health and social policy implications of cultural factors related to violence against women of color

Irene Jillson-Boostrom, PhD, Policy Research, Inc., 5216 Acacia Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814, 301/654-0775, bscott@samhsa.gov

This paper will address both the cultural factors that distinguish the understanding of violence against women and the role of substance abuse and the insufficient comprehension of these factors among many in the policy, program, and research community. It is believed that this lack of understanding influences the definition of violence, the design and conduct of research related to women, substance use, and violence–including design and use of standardized instruments, the design and evaluation of prevention and intervention programs, and the development of public policy. As a consequence, there is both an inadequate understanding of this public health problem and insufficient valid data on which to base public policies.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Describe the cultural factors that influence the understanding of violence against women of color and the role of substance abuse. Recognize the public health implications of this lack of understanding of cultural factors.
