The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the importance of understanding and integrating pop/hip hop culture into program design, implementation and assessment, when providing prevention and health education services to youth in urban settings. As demonstrated in past generations, trends in music, dance and politics can be very influential and can perpetuate the lifestyle that many young people choose to model. Developing a certain level of consciousness with respect to, not only ethinc culture, but to pop/hip hop culture, is critically important when providing services to youth in urban settings. The presence of pop/hip hop cultural awareness can have a major impact on the acceptance and effectiveness of a health promotion program especially in urban communities. An alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention program at a health department in an urban community has been able to successfully reach its target population by modifying its program approach and increasing knowledge and awareness among its staff. The steps, challenges and successes of intergrating pop/hip hop culture awareness into staff training and as a program component will be discussed. Methods for assessing the influence of pop/hip hop culture on a particular target population and creative ways of communicating and disseminating information to the targeted audience once assesed, will be shared and discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss the need for integrating pop/hip hop culture into health promotion programs and services and how to conduct a pop/hip hop culture audience assessment. 2. Recognize the importance of pop/hip hop culture awareness and consciousness. 3. Develop and implement effective audience assessment tools.
