The Center for Healthier Communities at Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, California, is conducting a comprehensive "Safe Routes to School" program planning project in the Mid-City area of San Diego. The area is relatively urban. The population walks as a primary mode of transportation. Mid-City has much cultural diversity including many recent immigrants to the United States. The area has been identified as having the highest incidence of pedestrian injuries in San Diego County for children under 14 years of age. Collaborating with community organizations, law enforcement, schools and the California Institute for Traffic Safety, the Center for Healthier Communites has established an ecletic group whose sole goal is to reduce unintentional pedestrian injury in their community. Session will describe development of successful strategic plan to achieve optimum satisfaction and results. The collaboration established to meet this goal can continue to work towards other community goals. A dynamic model to achieve specific goals will be demonstrated. See www.chsd.org
Learning Objectives: 1. LWBAT describe essential elements in effective community collaboration. 2. LWBAT describe how children pedestrians perceive traffic in a different way than adult pedestrians do. 3.
