In November 2000, the White House released “Promoting Better Health for Young People Through Physical Activity and Sports: A Report to the President from the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Education.” This report brought together for the first time in one document a comprehensive agenda to promote physical activity among youth. Many of the report’s recommendations focus on strategies to help all children, from prekindergarten through grade 12, to receive quality daily physical education and other school-based physical activity programs, such as health education, recess, and extracurricular activities. Since the release of the report, a group of federal agencies and non-governmental organizations have formed a workgroup to develop an action plan for implementing the report’s recommendations. This presentation will describe the progress made to date by the workgroup; preview forthcoming activities; and identify barriers, gaps, and opportunities for action. See www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dash/presphysactrpt/index.htm
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: (1) identify the key settings addressed by the report to the President, (2) identify three recommendations that the report makes about quality physical education programs, (3) identify five organizations involved in the workgroup; and (4) describe the progress made to date by the workgroup in developing an action plan.
