The presentation addresses the vital role of organizational leadership in creating an organizational culture that welcomes the challenge of prevention outreach to diverse communities. Specifically, the presentation considers various leadership models and highlights aspects of leadership styles that embrace and welcome difference and convey that message to members of the organization. Beyond the academic consideration of leadership styles, the presentation incorporates a case study drawn from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. The case study illustrates for conference participants the response of the organization’s leadership to substance abuse prevention outreach initiatives for three unique groups: (1) Hispanic/Latino girls; (2) six Asian communities; and, (3) the hearing and visually impaired. The steps taken by the managers of the Clearinghouse provide a model to other organizations similarly tasked to provide prevention messages to an increasingly global and inclusive community.
