Decades of abuses in health-related research in the Native Hawaiian community have led Native Hawaiians to take charge of their own research agenda and to begin the process of controling all health- related research activity through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process. This session will review some of the abuses which have occured in the past, efforts over the last decade to change how 'business as usual' attitudes are no longer acceptable, culturally-appropriate protocols which have been put in place, and indentify how Native Hawaiian are controling this and the role of research in the future.
The panel will be chaired by Ms. JoAnn Tsark, Research Director for Papa ola Lokahi and include four additional Native Hawaiian researchers who are either engaged in health-related research or assisting in fashioning how research is to be conducted in the Native Hawaiian community. Implications of this seesion are appropriate for all native populations and for all researchers doing or wishing to do research in native or minority populations/communities.
