This component of the panel will report on two sections of the international meeting on Power in Sexual Relationships held March 2001 in Washington DC. First it will summarize presentations of representatives of key donor and implementation agencies. Expected to participate "on the record" regarding their agencies' interest in and attention to the topic are: USAID Office of Population, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Population Council's Horizons project and regional programs, USAID Interagency Gender Working Group's Subcommittee on Men and Reproductive Health, SIDA, and UNFPA. This presentation will also report on small group discussions that took place on metholodolgical issues, including measuring power and study design. Other small group discussions to be summarized include how service delivery, community and media interventions can address unequal power in sexual relations. In addition, the presentation will discuss how to encourage greater communication and sharing of ideas among practitioners and researchers working on these issues.
Learning Objectives: The listener will learn to: --understand the way a variety of international agencies approach issues of power in sexual relationships --identify current and future regional and international efforts to promote research and action related to power in sexual relationships supported by these agencies --identify and understand various methodologies that are being developed to better understand and measure an abstract concept such as power as it affects the operation of reproductive and sexual health programs --make linkages with health professionals who share their interests, by joining electronic listservs or using other mechanisms to promote contact among like-minded experts
