There are over two billion world wide web pages available to the over 400 million youth and adults throughout the world. As we work to develop youth anti-tobacco advocates through mechanisms such as the National Teen Tobacco Web Site sponsored by the American Legacy Foundation, and as more state health department tobacco sites develop, more and more youth will be using web resources to develop strategies for reaching out to other youth. In the past, we have educated youth about the influence Tobacco and alcohol industries have had in the media. Now, we will expand this to approach to help youth and adults determine the quality of the information available to them on the web and the use of online advertising.

Web Wise for Tobacco addresses the information that youth and others should know related to determining accuracy, reliability, and source of web information. The presentation will include a strategy guide, educational materials, and promotional materials that can be incorporated into prevention programs in schools and communities.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: List three ways that the Tobacco Industry targets youth through the Internet Identify four key items that indicate the validity and reliability of the information on a web site.
