Learning objectives: 1. Describe how the Guide to Community Preventive Services will provide evidence-based recommendations to help communities select effective population-based interventions for youth tobacco use prevention. 2. Describe the evidence of effectiveness for youth access restrictions and school based interventions. Purpose: The Guide to Community Preventive Services provides systematic reviews and evidence-based recommendations for population-based interventions focused on disease prevention and health promotion as applied in non-clinical settings (e.g., schools and communities). An independent, non-Federal task force provides recommendations on interventions spanning 15 major public health topics, including tobacco use prevention. Methods: We developed a systematic process to identify, abstract, evaluate, and summarize studies describing interventions selected for inclusion in the tobacco chapter of the Community Guide. For each strategy, we describe and evaluate the evidence of effectiveness, applicability, additional benefits, and potential harms. The evidence review will highlight differences in population settings, identify critical intervention characteristics, and generate an agenda for further research. Results: This presentation will provide summary evidence and recommendations for two key youth tobacco prevention strategies: youth access restrictions and school-based interventions. Upon completion, the tobacco use prevention chapter will present evidence-based recommendations and information to assist communities in selecting interventions to reduce youth tobacco use reduction and initiation. This chapter will offer addition incentives for schools, communities, and other stakeholders to institute and enforce youth smoking restrictions. See www.thecommunityguide.org
