The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors funded a study of the social service and health care needs of the LGBT community in Santa Clara County, California. In a joint effort between the Billy DeFrank Lesbian and Gay Community Center and John Snow, Inc., a needs assessment was conducted to measure the need for and access to over 60 separate social and health services. Data was also collected on access to care, screening for sexually transmitted diseases, and use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. A provider survey was conducted to assess provider cultural competence with respect to the LGBT community. Focus groups provided qualitative feedback on the health and social service needs of the community. The results were used to develop a LGBT services plan for Santa Clara County.

This workshop will share the results of the needs assessment and planning process, discuss the methods for conducting the assessment and the potential for replication in other jurisdictions.
