Youth-targeted smoking prevention and cessation is an important priority for improving the nation’s health. While several effective youth-targeted smoking prevention programs exist, teen smoking cessation remains difficult due to barriers to recruitment and participation. The use of a multimedia interactive CDRom tailored to relevant user criteria offers a promising avenue for targeting both smoking and nonsmoking teens because it removes threats associated with being identified as a smoker. However, ensuring that such a program is well grounded in theory and evidence can be challenging for health educators. The current phase of this study involves the planning and development of an interactive multimedia CDRom for smoking prevention and cessation which is user-tailored based on 5 constructs: smoking status, susceptibility, nicotine addiction, depression/negative affect, and stage of change. Presented here is the development process for the CDRom, highlighting use of the Intervention MappingTM framework for integration of empirical evidence, behavioral science theory, and data from the target population into a comprehensive set of smoking prevention and cessation program objectives, methods and strategies. Eight matrices composed of learning objective cells (n>250) derived from performance objectives (n=36) and determinants of smoking behavior (n=8) are translated into methods, strategies and program plans. Result is the precipitation of the vision, parameters, tools and specifications from which a design team (instructional designer, script writer, videographer, and graphic designer) will begin production of the media elements.
Learning Objectives: Focusing on smoking prevention and cessation, participants will discover the Intervention Mapping framework as a stepped process to conceptualize, develop, implement, and evaluate theory-based multimedia health promotion programs.
