In today’s complex healthcare arena, personnel often approach problems and issues from vastly different perspectives. Managers and administrators struggle with difficult scenarios and must approach solutions from a fiscal perspective, whereas clinicians and educators may approach the same problem from a vastly different point of view.

In order to reach solutions that incorporate the clinical perspective within a fiscally sound strategy, a team building approach can be useful. Team building processes can illuminate the differing values and priorities of the differing constituency groups in a problem-laden arena, whether that arena is a university academic department, a hospital, corporation, or clinic setting. Ideal solutions involve meeting with and identifying specific needs and priorities of different constituency groups, and then bringing the various parties together to identify differences in problem-solving styles and barriers to collaborative solutions. Team-building strategies are employed to improve communication and enhance collaborative resolution of problematic situations.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, program participants will be able to: 1. Identify their personal style as a team member. 2. Articulate strategies for enhancing communication among people of differing communication styles. 3. Describe techniques for improving conflict resolution within organizations.
