Information that would allow documentation of men’s use of health care services and the extent of their health insurance coverage has been available for some time, but has not been analyzed from the perspective of understanding men and sexual and reproductive health care.
We first examine the overall level, and sources and trends of insurance coverage among men of reproductive age by their age, race/ethnicity, and employment status using the Current Population Survey.
To measure sexual and reproductive health services that men receive, we use a series of nationally representative surveys from the National Center for Health Statistics that measure patient visits to hospitals and private physician offices. Compared to men who make medical visits for any reason we examine the prevalence and rates that men receive major categories of sexual and reproductive health services, such as STD/HIV screening and treatment, family planning; psychosexual disorders; infertility; prostate disorders; and other sexual health services
Finally, we examine significant differences in types and levels of sexual and reproductive services across demographic and socioeconomic subgroups of men.
Although there is no consensus as yet on what constitutes “male sexual reproductive health services” several organizations have formulated alternative definitions from their differing perspectives. Using these approaches, we interpret the findings from the perspective of what they can tell us about existing gaps in men’s access to sexual and reproductive health services.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants in this session will be able to: Describe how health insurance coverage varies among men of reproductive age by various demographic and socio-economic groups. List the rates at which men receive major sexual and reproductive health services and how the delivery of these services varies by demographic and socio-economic groups.
