The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s unique expertise is being applied to target the health needs of older Americans through a number of strategies. 1)Providing public health leadership and coordination with, for example, the Administration on Aging (AoA), CDC is integrating health promotion and disease prevention into the aging network. 2) Enhancing surveillance on the health status of older adults, CDC is furthering understanding of how older Americans perceive their physical and mental health and how well they are able to carry out the activities of daily living essential to addressing their health-related needs. 3) Putting research to work for older Americans has positioned CDC to work with senior centers in implementing the Wellness Intervention Study in the Elderly (WISE), a program to help seniors exercise, eat well, and preserve their independence through the Northwest Prevention Effectiveness Center at the University of Washington. With the American Society on Aging and the Roybal Institute of Applied Gerontology, California State, LA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is taking the information on older adult health promotion and providing professionals working with older adults practical strategies and activities in easy-to- use, Internet accessible programs. This session will discuss CDC’s Aging Initiatives and how The ASA-Roybal project fits CDC’s services to the aging community.
