The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between self-reported functional status and quality of life in a selected group of mine workers. The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP), a 136-item self- or interviewer administered, behaviorally based, health status questionnaire was used to determine the health status of selected mine workers in Sivas, Turkey. The SIP was delivered to 525 mine workers and 52% of the participants completed and returned the questionnaire. The reported mean scores for everyday activities in 12 categories were as follows: sleep and rest (13.82), emotional behavior (13.97), body care and movement (2.99), home management (36.84), mobility (14.25), social interaction (7.58), ambulation (7.45), alertness behavior (11.88),communication (9.50), work (11.76), recreation and pastimes (23.66), and eating (7.74). The efficacy of health promotion actions was also analyzed, and recommendations on further improvement of the working conditions are presented here along with a discussion of the role of government in improving the working conditions of miners in Turkey.
