Objective: The CDC is currently developing a CBO evaluation guidance to help CBOs collect and use HIV prevention data. This guidance requires CBOs to submit every quarter aggregated process data by intervention type and risk population. It is important for CBOs to have the ability to manage individual client-level data. The ~{!0~}CBO Software Needs Survey~{!1~} was conducted in November 2000 to determine if there is interest in a computerized CBO Client Data Management Tool to be developed by CDC. Methods: One hundred and fourteen CBOs that responded to the survey (response rate=58%) were included in this analysis. Results: Among the 114 respondents, 82% agreed that the software would be helpful; 83% agreed that they would use the software; and 54% agreed that they would use the software even if CDC does not provide funds for new equipment. The willingness to use the software was not related to: whether the CBO already had at least one computer that a client management tool can be installed on; whether that existing computer could be connected to the Internet for reporting client managed data; or whether the CBO was currently funded by CDC. However, it was strongly related to whether the CBO was already using some similar existing software (p=0.004). Conclusions: There is a strong interest among CBOs to use the software if it is developed. CBOs that do not have similar existing software are more inclined to use the software to be developed by CDC, regardless of their current equipment capacity.
