Abstract Text: While significant progress has been made in developing effective research-based approaches to drug abuse prevention over the past two decades, little attention has been devoted to the importance of parent influence on adolescent drug use. It is crucial to combine the latest research concerning effective drug prevention programs with parenting knowledge and skills training implemented in the home setting. The Parent Component is a self-contained unit consisting of a 20-minute videotape and parent guide. This project offers the potential to fill a major gap in the field by targeting family-level etiologic factors within the framework of a proven prevention approach.
Methodology: Prototype versions of a parent guide and a parent video were subjected to extensive focus group testing with parents of middle/junior-high school aged children. The objective of the focus group testing was to ascertain the extent to which parents view the materials as helpful in raising their children to be drug-free.
Results: Focus group data results concerning the extent to which parents view the intervention materials as helpful in raising their child to be drug-free will be presented. These data will be used to design, finalize and formally evaluate new prevention materials developed and subjected to formative clinical evaluation.
Learning Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine feasibility, acceptability and potential efficacy of newly developed parent prevention materials to be used in conjunction with a state-of-the-art, research and school based, effective drug abuse prevention program.
