Abstract #23553

Tools for community-wide prevention planning

Jane Dietzman, BSN and Linda Feltes, MS. Minnesota Department of Health, PO Box 64882, St. Paul, MN 55164-0882, 651/281-9822, jane.dietzman@health.state.mn.us

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Articulate the importance of community-wide collaboration in preventing and reducing risky health behaviors among youth. Funded by the Federal Bureau of Maternal and Child Health from October 1996 through September 2000, the Minnesota Department of Health Community Integrated Service Systems (CISS) project demonstrated a model of a community-based systems approach to the prevention of and intervention in alcohol and tobacco use among youth. Participants will be able to define systems integration and learn to easily adapt this model to other youth risk behaviors.

2. Identify lessons learned from 4 community pilot sites regarding implementing a systems-wide prevention effort. Four existing coalitions, diverse in size, structure and location around the state, were chosen as demonstration sites. They implemented the model and gave us insights into the hurdles to plan for in community-wide prevention planning efforts.

3. Apply a set of prevention planning tools designed to assess, develop, implement and mobilize a prevention effort. During the demonstration site process, community prevention planning tools were developed for use by community leaders to facilitate coalition building. The tools are: the Community-based and Organization-based Prevention Wheels; a set of Community Prevention Planning Tools; and the document "Promising Practices for Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention among Youth".

We will walk participants through the application of these tools. The final report of the project, including recommendations, lessons learned, and the results of the project evaluation will be made available at the presentation and on-line.
