The purpose of this presentation is to discuss implementation at community sites and preliminary findings of the Staying Healthy Project, a community-based generalization study funded by SAMHSA/Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The Staying Healthy Project is designed to apply proven brief alcohol prevention intervention techniques in community-based settings serving older adults. Study components include brief intervention training for social service providers in community sites, screening, conducting brief interventions, and six-month follow-up post-intervention. Implementation components include: (1) adapting materials from previous clinic-based studies to community settings; (2) adapting materials and developing protocols for a diverse population including monolingual Chinese, Spanish, and Russian speakers; and (3) strategies for multiple screening modalities.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant in this session will be able to: 1. Identify a range of successful strategies for screening and applying brief intervention to older adults at-risk for alcohol problems at diverse community-based settings. 2. Articulate ways to adapt a research protocol from clinical settings to community-based settings. 3. Discuss aspects of adapting a research protocol from application in a primarily homogeneous population to a culturally diverse population.
