The need for culturally relevant assessment and evaluation tools in American Indian communities is great. A research team in need of such a tool developed and implemented a Community Mapping methodology as a part of a project in South Dakota and Nebraska. The Community Mapping tool was used in assessing community nutritional resources on several Indian reservations located in South Dakota and Nebraska. Findings were used in developing the nutrition content of a high-risk prevention and education curriculum. The method used and the application of the findings are discussed. The potential importance of this technique in planning interventions for specific populations is presented.
