Empowering lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people through building alliances: A practice model for implementing HP 2010 LGBT Companion Document provides information and skills necessary for developing and implementing a community alliance plan that increases awareness of diverse health care issues affecting LGBT people. The presentation describes multigenerational experiences of LGBT health issues such as the building of alliances during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980’s and current lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health care issues reported in the companion document. The presentation will ask participants to recognize different health care needs and access to care issues between lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in their community and then apply the practice model in creating alliances to address those issues. The practice model combines the principles of several social and practice theories including, but not limited to, queer theory, empowerment theory, and systems theory, with community collaboration techniques. The learning objectives include the participant’s ability to: 1) Assess and identify the three health care issues related to LGBT people within their community and relate them to the recommendations presented in the HP 2010 LGBT Companion Document; 2) Empower LGBT people through applying a practice model that informs the community on the three identified health care issues related to LGBT in their community and; 3) Create alliances between LBGT communities, health care providers and community organizations within the next year that address the three health care needs experienced by LGBT people within their community.
