Purpose: to facilitate annual injury data dialog among APHA members, specifically about: 1) ICD-10: it marks a significant departure from past versions of the ICD for injury deaths. We will examine a new ICD-10 intent/mechanism matrix using national and state specific data. 2) ICD-10 CM (injury codes): Since development of these are nearing completion, we will examine how they will impact the definition and categorization of injury morbidity. 3) Data on violence: As work to prevent violence using public health methods intensifies, so does the need for good violence data. We will discuss what ICD -10 & ICD-10 CM can and cannot capture regarding all forms of interpersonal violence. 4) National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) will soon provide information on all external causes, intents, and types of nonfatal injuries treated in US hospital emergency departments. We will discuss the strengths and limitations of the system and how we can access the data for use in international, national, state and local injury prevention and control activities. 5) International Collaborative Effort on Injury Statistics: met in April 2001 to discuss progress on many of its data related projects. In particular, we will discuss work on the development of injury indicators.

Learning Objectives: Session objectives: 1) increase injury data expertise among APHA members; 2) draw on participants' expertise to improve data systems & uses; 3) address difficult issues and explore potential solutions; 4) create active networks among injury data providers & users.
