Abstract #22290

SESSION ABSTRACT "The RWJF ImpacTeen Project: Trends in ATOD policies"

Dianne C. Barker, Barker Bi-Coastal Health Consultants, , dcbarker@earthlink.net

This 90 minute session will present findings from four chartbooks recently produced by Impacteen; A Policy Research Partnership to Reduce Youth Substance Use, a Robert Wood Johnson-funded project. Impacteen is a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional project to evaluate the relative effectiveness of policy initiatives and environmental changes to reduce alcohol, illicit drug and tobacco use among adolescents. Collectively, these chartbooks summarize many existing ATOD policies in the U.S. that affect youth behavior. Data on recent trends in state legislation on drug and alcohol control and attitudes toward tobacco policies and interventions, as well as a description of tobacco retailer environments, will be presented. Each presenter also will discuss the relationships between ATOD policy and youth behavior, and outline recommendations for future policy changes applicable to communities and states worldwide seeking to reduce youth ATOD use.
