As the training need for public health informatics increases, successful instructor dependent courses are unable to fulfill the need due to limited resources. To meet this demand, the challenge is to create a distance learning environment that builds on the model of the instructor dependent course and reaches public health professionals at any time in any place. This presentation discusses the challenges of converting a pre-existing Informatics workshop to a web-based course. Among the challenges in developing this course include the following: 1) gathering Informatics expertise; 2) reviewing content for inclusion into web-based course; 3) identifying instructional strategies; 4) developing additional content needed to support a web-based course; and 5) organizing materials for a flexible learning environment. Instructional strategies for the web-based course such as digitized lectures, self-tests, interactive case-based scenarios, and self-guided learning will be demonstrated.
