The purpose of this presentation is to describe a social justice issue project that is part of an undergraduate public health nursing course at South Dakota State University. The concept of social justice is a public health principle. In addition, social justice is 1 of 5 core values of nursing described by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Application of social justice requires nursing students to uphold moral, legal and humanistic principles in relationship to health and health care. Students select a social justice issue of importance on a state, local, national or international level. The students are then guided through a process of examining the historical context of the issue. Prior or current efforts to address the social justice issue are summarized by the students and a public health intervention is planned and implemented to address the social justice issue. Students are encouraged to explore specific advocacy activities and are asked to identify health-related organizations or coalitions that relate to the social justice issue. Students evaluate their own role in the social justice issue selected and anticipate future involvement in the issue. Examples of student projects and assignment guidelines will be provided. Outcome evaluation of the project will also be described.
