Exposure to lead is the single most prevalent environmental threat to the health of children in the nation, and lead contaminants in victim's homes are the primary source of exposure. This health threat is totally preventable through educational interventions. This environmental educational project was a multidisciplinary collaboration to develop, implement, and evaluate a technology-based instructional program about protecting children from lead poisoning. The overall goal of this project was to produce an innovative CD-ROM program on the hazards of lead poisoning around the home to assist parents in recognizing hazards, learning about safety-proofing the home environment, making decisions about removing hazards, and preventing future lead-related health problems. We developed an interactive multimedia CD-ROM disc to encourage learners through a fanciful interactive home (on the computer monitor) to explore and uncover lead hazards, to learn what makes each item a threat, and how to correct the situation. The program includes neighborhood scenes such as playgrounds, neighbor's homes, and garage sales to create problem solving and testing situations with "real world" themes. We used a quasi-experimental approach to test the program and the results of that evaluation will be included in this presentation. There was a significant increase in knowledge by those who were exposed to the program compared to the control group. The investigators also gleaned valuable information on program design and implementation and these will be shared in the presentation as well.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe multimedia educational program on lead poisoning prevention. 2. Evaluate the impact of the educational program on the learner's knowlege and behavior. 3. Describe leasons learned while implementing the program.
