Abstract #21920

Tracking Iowa's health agenda in the new decade

Louise Lex, PhD, Iowa Department of Public Health, Lucas State Office Building, Des Moines, IA 50319-0075, 515-281-4348, llex@idph.ia.state.us

A tracking system is the very basis for selling Healthy Iowans 2010 as well as continuing to engage those who contributed to its development. The system built upon the format for chapter goals and action steps used in both Healthy Iowans 2000 and in the 2010 plan. Each goal was followed by a series of action steps to be accomplished by a specific date with partners who had agreed to take responsibility for the action. To assure that all partners were aware of their roles, they were asked to 1. begin documenting their progress; 2. identify barriers that may be inhibiting that progress; 3. be ready to report on their progress at year end. A form for reporting progress was available electronically. When compiled, this information will be used to make an assessment of progress, to publicize accomplishments, and to revise the goals and action steps at midcourse in the decade.

A number of the chapter teams that had developed the plan chose to continue as monitoring groups, but this varied. New coalitions also formed including a group of 65 key organizations that organized to secure the tobacco settlement funds for health. Plans are underway to use the Leading Health Indicators to communicate progress and spotlight achievements during the decade and develop a state level report card. This report card will be published in annual reports, vital statistics reports, and other publications.
