Americans bear a heavy burden of death, injury and disability that can be prevented through prevention research. The overriding goal of prevention research is to discover methods to prevent disease, disability and death and to translate those methods into effective interventions in community settings. CDC’s Extramural Prevention Research Program links researchers in academic settings with local communities and public health practitioners. To communicate this program's research priorities and funding opportunities contractors were engaged to elicit data on perceptions and craft messages to promote the program.
This session will present the results of CDC's formative research on public health professionals' perceptions of prevention research and of funding extramural prevention research at CDC. Presenters will also describe the process of identifying messages, using these data, for enhancing visibility of extramural prevention research.
Presentations to be included in this session are as follows: 1) “Building National Support for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research” (APHA Abstract #21943) 2) “Enhancing the Visibility of Prevention Research at CDC: An Evaluation of Prevention Research Audience and Message Needs” (APHA Abstract #21943) 3) "Positioning Prevention Research: Developing a Marketing Strategy for a New Program” (APHA Abstract #21954)
