Tiered systems and specific rules of risk assessment exist in many regulatory processes. This talk will educate a general audience regarding the tiered approach as it applies to dietary risk assessment for the registration of pesticides in the US. Four levels of refinement will be described including the types of data and assumptions used and the built-in conservatism that is associated with each level of refinement. The levels of refinement will be demonstrated through a case study look at the active ingredient spinosad, a reduced-risk pesticide.
