The purpose of descriptive study was to evaluate "Moms on the Move", a nurse-counseled physical activity intervention for WIC mothers. The Transtheoretical Model derived intervention included 10-20 minutes of provider counseling, guided by an interactive brochure, and four follow-up telephone contacts. Methods: The evaluation occurred in two stages. In stage 1, physical activity behavioral experts (n=4) evaluated a) the rationale for each intervention component, b) the linkages between behavior change constructs, intervention components, intervention activities and study outcomes, and c) and the written intervention materials. The expert evaluation tool was a modified version of the "Educational Materials Review Form." Stage 1 findings: Alpha reliability of the written materials evaluation tool was .92. Each item met the < 3.0 mean criterion (range 1.33-2.67). Revisions were made to the intervention based on expert comments before stage 2. In stage 2, WIC mothers (n=5) evaluated only the revised written intervention brochure. The 9-item WIC mothers' evaluation tool was adapted from a simple tool for community members. Stage 2 findings: Alpha reliability for the WIC mothers' evaluation tool was high (r=.96). The intervention evaluation had a mean total score of 44.0 (SD=1.22), which met criterion to retain as is (range 40-45). Mean responses for the nine items were high, (range 4.8 to 5.0 [5.0="great"]). The descriptive evaluation indicates that "Moms on the Move" is a promising intervention for WIC mothers. Funding sources: NIH, National Research Service Award 1 F31 NR07420-01A1. Learning Objectives: Describe the process of developing a theory-derived nurse-counseled physical activity intervention for WIC mothers. Evaluate the Transtheoretical Model-derived intervention activities for sedentary WIC mothers. Discuss the two-stage process of a descriptive evaluation of the physical activity intervention by people experts (WIC mothers) and content experts (physical activity behavioral scientists).
