As part of the application to the Global Fund for Children's Vaccines (GFCV)/Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) for immunization program assistance, governments are required to have a recently-conducted assessment of the immunization program and a current multi-year plan. Both Cambodia and Myanmar conducted program assessments and developed five-year plans in preparation for their GAVI application. Incorporating financing components into these activities provides an opportunity for improving financial sustainability and efficiency. Financial analysis is useful not only to identify areas for improved financial management, but also as an advocacy tool for improving financial sustainability. In Cambodia and Myanmar, some specific findings included: 1) consolidating financing mechanisms for field costs of immunizations would increase transparency and insure more rational funding allocations; 2) increased national government funding should be advocated to ensure long-term sustainability; 3) improved operational efficiency can have significant impact on program costs.
Learning Objectives: Based on work in Cambodia and Myanmar, this session will show how assessing the financing of immunization programs can lead to recommendations to improve the efficiency and sustainability of national immunization programs. Participants will gain understanding of the importance of the macroeconomic situation, current and projected immunization program costs, and the mechanisms and strategies for funding immunizations on overall program performance.
